Walk into any Japanese drugstore and you’ll find shelves of sunscreens, lotions, and makeup that cost far less than you might expect. Many of the products people abroad hunt for online sell in Japan for under ¥2,000, and plenty of them for under ¥1,000.

This guide covers ten popular picks across sunscreen, skincare, and makeup. For each one, you’ll find what it is, the size, the Japan price, and where you might buy it overseas.

A quick note on prices: All Japan prices in this post are shelf or official prices checked on 2026-10-10, and they can change at any time (sales are common). Overseas prices are usually higher once import costs and shipping are added. The overseas prices listed here are YesStyle sale prices (shipping to the US, in USD) as of 2026-10-10, when most of these items were about 20% off; the original price is shown in parentheses. As of 2026-10-10, YesStyle offered free shipping on orders of $35 or more, with delivery taking 7–11 business days. Always check the current price on the store page before you buy.

Skincare

4. Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion

  • What it is: A hydrating lotion (化粧水, the Japanese equivalent of a toner) from Rohto’s Hada Labo line. One Japan lifestyle guide calls Hada Labo “arguably the most beloved drugstore skincare line in Japan” (Japan Living Life).
  • Size: 170mL
  • Japan price: ¥1,100 (Rohto official shop)
  • Overseas: 170mL bottle $14.16 (YesStyle, sale price as of 2026-10-10). The refill is $13.92 (was $17.40). When we checked, both the bottle and the refill were backordered for about 21 days.

5. Melano CC Medicated Intensive Spot Treatment Serum

  • What it is: A serum from Rohto’s Melano CC line, sold abroad as “Melano CC Vitamin C Essence.” It’s classified in Japan as a quasi-drug (医薬部外品), and it’s formulated to help prevent dark spots and freckles caused by sun exposure. The same Japan Living Life guide describes Melano CC as “Japan’s go-to vitamin C drugstore line.” As with any skincare, results vary from person to person.
  • Size: 20mL
  • Japan price: ¥1,210 (Rohto official shop)
  • Overseas: Hong Kong version $9.04 (was $11.30); Japan version $10.16 (YesStyle, sale price as of 2026-10-10).

9. Kiss Me Heroine Make Long & Curl Mascara Advanced Film

  • What it is: A film-type mascara from Isehan’s Heroine Make (Kiss Me) line. One beauty site, Clinic Japan, describes it as the Japanese drugstore product that “most dramatically outperforms its Western equivalents” — that’s their opinion, but it shows how well regarded it is.
  • Size: 6g
  • Japan price: ¥1,320 (manufacturer’s suggested retail price)
  • Overseas: $8.88 (was $11.10) (YesStyle, sale price as of 2026-10-10)

10. KATE Super Sharp Liner EX4.0

  • What it is: A liquid eyeliner from KATE. In Japan, a refill cartridge is sold separately and costs less than the liner (¥1,100 vs. ¥1,430).
  • Japan price: ¥1,430 for the liner, ¥1,100 for a refill (Kao official)
  • Overseas: Liner $13.40–14.06 (was $14.10) (YesStyle, sale price as of 2026-10-10). The refill was $15.40 and backordered. Unlike in Japan, the refill costs more than the liner on YesStyle, so the liner is the better buy overseas. The liner and refill share one product page, so check which one you’re adding to your cart.

How to Read Japanese Packaging

Most of these products are labeled mainly in Japanese. A few key words will help you tell what you’re holding:

JapaneseReadingMeaning
日焼け止めhiyakedomeSunscreen
化粧水keshōsuiLotion / toner
美容液biyōekiSerum / essence
洗顔senganFace wash
医薬部外品iyaku-bugaihinQuasi-drug (a Japanese category between cosmetics and medicine)
薬用yakuyōMedicated (often seen on quasi-drug products)
つめかえ用 / レフィルtsumekae-yō / refiruRefill
税込 / 税抜zeikomi / zeinukiTax included / tax excluded

Tip: on Japanese price tags and sites, look for 税込 (tax included) versus 税抜 (tax excluded). That is why the same product can seem to have two prices.

How to Spot Fakes

Popular, affordable products are sometimes counterfeited. There’s no single foolproof test, but these general habits lower your risk:

  1. Buy from official or authorized stores. Stick to the brand’s own shop, major retailers, or well-known beauty retailers. Be more careful with unknown marketplace sellers.
  2. Be wary of prices far below normal. Overseas prices for Japanese products are usually higher than Japan prices, not lower. If a listing is dramatically cheaper than the Japan prices in this guide, treat it as a red flag.
  3. Check the packaging and Japanese labeling. Genuine Japanese products normally carry Japanese text with the product name, ingredients, and manufacturer details. Compare the packaging with photos on the brand’s official site, and watch out for blurry printing, misspellings, or missing information.
  4. Match the exact product. Check the size, version, and whether it’s a refill or a multi-pack, so you know you’re getting what you expect.
  5. Read seller details and reviews. Look at how long the seller has been operating and what other buyers say about authenticity.

Where to Buy Overseas

If you’re not in Japan, online retailers that stock Japanese beauty are the easiest option. All overseas prices in this guide are from YesStyle. Keep in mind:

  • Prices on YesStyle can differ depending on the region you’re browsing from.
  • As of 2026-10-10, YesStyle offered free shipping to the US on orders of $35 or more, with delivery in 7–11 business days. Import charges may still apply depending on where you live.
  • Sale prices end; the original prices are shown in parentheses throughout this guide.
  • Availability and versions can differ from what’s sold in Japan.

Final Thoughts

Japanese drugstore beauty is a great way to try well-known products without spending much. In Japan, every item in this guide costs under ¥2,000. Overseas you’ll pay more, but buying from trusted stores and knowing what the original costs helps you pay a fair price and avoid fakes.

Prices were checked on 2026-10-10 and may have changed since then, so always confirm on the store page before buying.
